Sanctuary
Oyster Sanctuaries are planted to create self-sustaining reef structures that will provide environmental benefits. The oysters planted on sanctuaries are restricted to any harvest, they are meant to help clean the water, provide habitat for a wide assortment of bay flora and fauna, and produce naturally occurring spat-set that can increase the oyster population in surrounding waters.

Sanctuary creation in the Chesapeake Bay and the tributaries is very costly, ranging from 2 to 6 times the expense of creating similar sized Managed Reserve area. Oyster spat is planted at a volume of 2 million spat per acre in Sanctuaries, double the volume of 1 Million spat per acre in the Managed Reserve areas.
