Job Description 

The Coastal Resource Scientist I will be responsible for supporting ORP’s sustainable fisheries, oyster restoration, and monitoring programs. The Coastal Resource Scientist I will work closely with ORP’s Coastal Science team. We are seeking a candidate with experience using ArcGIS, an understanding of estuarine ecology, and a passion for applying science to conserve coastal resources. The ideal candidate will be comfortable operating and working on boats in various weather conditions. The position requires strong communication, the ability to adhere to schedules, strategic/critical thinking, and problem- solving skills. 

The Coastal Resource Scientist I will spend 50-75% of their time outdoors and in the field. Frequent in- state travel using the candidate’s personal vehicle is required (occasional out-of-state travel to Virginia may also be required). 

Specific job responsibilities include: 

  • Assist with coordinating and conducting field sampling activities, including derelict fishing gear removal, oyster aquaculture lease mapping, and pre- and post-restoration oyster habitat surveys 
  • Document oyster restoration activities 
  • Maintain and assist with field equipment set up (including sonar and water quality equipment) 
  • Assist with data entry, management, and analysis of ORP's restoration, monitoring, and sustainable fisheries spatial databases (including supporting sonar data processing) 
  • Support development and implementation of electronic reporting and new technologies for fisheries, aquaculture, and oyster restoration 
  • Assist with writing technical reports and peer-reviewed publications 
  • Assist with developing communication tools for ORP’s website, partners, and the public 
  • Support ORP’s education and community outreach events 

Essential Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Marine Science, Ecology, Biology, Environmental Science, or related discipline
  • Experience with scientific sampling 
  • Familiarity with oyster biology, restoration, and/or aquaculture preferred 
  • Familiarity with fisheries management, Chesapeake Bay or mid-Atlantic estuarine fisheries preferred 
  • Experience with ArcGIS 
  • Basic understanding of ecological data analysis 
  • Must have documented boating and trailering experience and be comfortable working from boats 
  • Must possess reliable transportation 
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal skills

Position Details and Benefits: 

This is a full-time (40 hours/week) position with a starting salary of $40,000 and full benefits including health insurance, 401k, and paid time off. The primary work location is in Annapolis, Maryland. Frequent travel to field sites (up to 125 miles from Annapolis) is required. Reimbursement for mileage, meals, and other qualifying expenses are available for travel and field activities.

Primary Role and Functions: 

The Oyster Recovery Partnership (ORP) is seeking a full-time Shell Collection and Delivery Technician to support the organization’s Shell Recycling Alliance Program (SRA).   

Each year millions of oyster shells are lost to landfills in the Mid-Atlantic region.  SRA works with restaurants, local municipalities, and a diverse range of partners to provide simple solutions to recycling oyster shells for restoration of Chesapeake Bay oyster populations.  Major responsibilities include daily collection and delivery of recycled oyster shells from around the Delmarva & DC Metro areas, driving stake body trucks to transport shells, compiling and managing shell collection data, and interacting with the public.  

Location: The position will be based in Annapolis, MD.  

Job Duties: 

At a minimum this position will support the following programmatic activities: 

  1. Manage daily collection of oyster shells for the Shell Recycling Alliance (SRA)
  2. Weekly trips to collect oyster and clam shell containers at metro region restaurants. Must be able to drive medium duty, Class 3-5, non CDL trucks. 
  3. Interact with restaurant and other partner personnel. 
  4. Maintain basic truck operations (fueling, checking fluid levels, applying lubricants, inspecting/reporting operational condition daily). 

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Valid driver’s license; CDL license a plus 
  • Participation in ORP drug testing program & background check 
  • Ability to provide evidence of clean driving record 
  • Experience interacting and communicating with diverse groups 
  • Ability to work independently while simultaneously managing and scheduling tasks.
  • Ability to effectively communicate schedules and progress 
  • Knowledge and understanding of job safety practices 
  • Ability to cope in physically demanding work environment on a daily basis 
  • Able to lift or move objects up to 60 pounds, climb into and out of vehicles 4’ high and travel over uneven terrain such as; Mud, Gravel, Sand, Rocks, Ice & Snow 

Additional Requirements: 

  • Ability to work outside in all weather conditions 
  • Detect and react to warning signals at work sites (full visual and hearing) 
  • Basic computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite Software (Access Database a plus) 
  • Travel in vehicles within MD and neighboring states (Delmarva & DC Metro areas) is required for this position.  

Position Status and Benefits: 

This position is full-time with benefits. Salary is between $42-45K depending on qualifications and experience.
