This past weekend was #NationalSharkAwarenessDay and its critical to highlight the role sharks play in our ecosystems. Overfishing of sharks in the North Atlantic has had a disastrous impact on scallops, oysters, and clams. Recent research shows how removing top predators can disrupt food chains. While large sharks like hammerheads and great whites don’t eat shellfish, their decline has caused a surge in intermediate predators such as rays, skates, and smaller sharks, which do prey on shellfish. This imbalance creates a cascade of effects, impacting water quality, our economy, and our dinner plates. Sharks naturally control the population of rays, including the Cownose Ray, which feeds on bivalves like oysters.

So, this summer, if you find yourself at a clam bake or an oyster bar, raise a toast to the sharks and all apex predators. Their presence is essential for maintaining healthy local waters and fisheries.
