In collaboration with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (@marylanddnr), ORP is actively supporting Marylands commercial oyster industry by procuring and planting wild oyster seed (young, small, juvenile, or not yet market size), substrate, and spat-on-shell on the states wild harvest reefs. These combined efforts are aimed at fostering a robust and sustainable oyster fishery.

Were excited to share that last month, ORP began planting wild seed from Virginia across designated oyster bars identified through collaboration with the county oyster committees and MD DNR. These plantings are currently ongoing and will continue through mid-May, supporting reef enhancement across five counties throughout the Maryland portion of the Chesapeake Bay. The primary objective of this initiative is to replenish the oyster population on natural oyster bars that have experienced harvesting activities in recent years, creating sustainable harvest areas for upcoming seasons.
